Sly Stone (born Sylvester Stewart, March 15, 1943)
Sly Stone – Leader of the unbelievebly, amazingly, hot 1960′-70′s funk/rock band Sly and the Family Stone. The Family Stone were one of the first truly multiracial bands to become popular in the 60′s. Made up of both sexes they were; Cynthia Robinson, Fred Stewart (Sly’s brother), Larry Graham, Greg Errico, Jerry Martini, and Sly’s sister Rosie Stone.
Along w/ James Brown and Parliment-Funkedelic they were pioneers of the ‘new funk’. Their 3rd LP “Stand” turned the corner for them with the 3 number 1 hits – “Everyday People”, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), & “Everybody is a Star”. And then came Woodstock – the concert and the movie. With the band’s huge fame and success came some problems. Relationships within the band were deteriorating; there was friction in particular between the Stone brothers and Larry Graham (the King of the Slap Base). The militant Black Panthers gave Sly trouble, demanding he fire his white band members and record more music to further the Black Power cause. Sly’s musical output dwindled as he got more into cocaine and PCP. Around 1984 he simply disappeared. Coming out of seclusion in 2005 he now lives in Napa Valley, CA and drives wildly customized motorcycles. He has a new LP scheduled for release on Aug. 30th – will see.
