Film: Cool Hand Luke

Let’s imagine for a minute you haven’t seen Cool Hand Luke. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, this 1967 drama about a prisoner (Luke) who refuses to conform to life on a chain gang in rural Florida is near perfect. Starring Paul Newman at his blue eyed peak and an unbelievable supporting cast – George Kennedy (winner Best Supporting Actor), Harry Dean Stanton, Joe Don Baker, Dennis Hopper, Wayne Rodgers, Ralph Waite and Strother Martin as the evil Road Boss Captain. Luke as been voted the 30th greatest hero in film by AFI and the film number 71 in it’s Hundred Years… list. The line, “What we have here is failure to communicate” was voted the 11th most recognizable line in movie history. If you haven’t seen this yet, see it today. It’s a great, great movie and you’ll also know what your Mom’s been going on about, about Paul Newman.

"Sometimes nothin' is a real cool hand"

"My boy says he can eat fifty eggs, he can eat fifty eggs".

"What we have here is failure to communicate".

There's no playing grab-ass or fighting in the building. You got a grudge against another man, you fight him Saturday afternoon. Any man playing grab-ass or fighting in the building spends a night in the box.

"He's a natural born world-shaker".

"Now, I can be a good guy, or I can be one real mean sum-bitch".
