Photography: Joy Division’s Tombs

Joy Division - Closer 1980

Joy Division’s use of Italian tomb photography for it’s final 2 releases was oddly prescient. Lead singer Ian Curtis would hang himself just weeks before the release of the Closer LP.  The album cover was designed by Martyn Atkins and Peter Saville with photography from Bernard Pierre Wolff. The photo is of The Appiani Family tomb in Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno Genoa Italy. The tomb and it’s photography is amazingly beautiful. Extremely detailed it depicts mourners at the grave.

Joy Division - 1980 Single "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

The single “Love Will Tear Us Apart” was released after Ian Curtis’s death and became their only chart hit. Designed by Peter Saville, it is of a detail of the Familia Ribaudo Tomb, also in the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno. For both LPs, the design is simple and elegant with a perfect combination of striking photography and type.
