Photography: The Krays
Reginald “Reggie” Kray (24 October 1933 – 1 October 2000) and his twin brother Ronald “Ronnie” Kray (24 October 1933 – 17 March 1995) – These boys were the godfathers of the London underworld in the sixties. Running numerous protection rackets, responsible for multiple armed robberies, arson, and murder, they ran London through the 1950’s and 60’s – becoming celebrities themselves, in the bargain. Owning 2 East End nightclubs they hobnobbed w/ the stars, even being photographed by fashion and star photographer David Bailey. Sinatra hung with them while in England as did Judy Garland. Ronnie, who was openly homosexual, had an alledged affair w/ Lord Bothby (?) keeping him somewhat protected from arrest. But through the perserverance of of the cop with the greatest name ever – Leonard “Nipper” Read, they were finally brought in in 1968. Convicted of murder, the Krays were sentenced to life – Ronnie dieing in prison in ’95 and Reggie, let out in 1999 on compassionate leave (cancer) died at home a few months later.
