Badlands – 1973 Directed by Terrence Malik. Starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. One of Terrence Malik’s few movies, this, for my money, is the best. Based on the Charlie Starkweather, Caril Ann Fugate killing spree of 1959, though not admitted too in the film. The story centers around a young drifter, Kit (Martin Sheen) and his affair with a 14 year old bored dreamer Holly (Sissy) and eventually their 2 month killing spree that left 11 people dead. This is not Bonnie and Clyde, this film is slow and dreamy with most of the violence off screen. The long tag line on the (somewhat boring) poster says it all.
Caril Ann Fugate – the youngest women in the US to be tried for first-degree murder. Caril was sentenced to life for her part of the spree but was parolled after 17 years and now lives in Lansing MI.
Charlie Starkweather – Convicted of 11 murders, Charlie was executed in the electric chair 17 months after being convicted.
