Michael Alig is a free man

Michael Alig and friend James St. James (along w/ Rupaul, Amanda Lepore, et al) were part of the late 80’searly 90’s New York personalities known as The Club Kids.  The group was notable for their elaborate and outrageous costumes and rampant drug use.

Alig’s notoriety and influence grew, and at one point he was on the payrolls of several clubs owned by Peter Gatien for simply showing up with his entourage, since their behavior attracted customers. Alig and the Club Kids also began holding illegal “outlaw” parties in various public places, including a donut shop, a semi-truck trailer, and the NYC Subway. At the height of their cultural popularity, the Club Kids toured the United States and appeared on several talk shows, such as Geraldo, Phil Donahue and Joan Rivers (on Youtube and hilarious).

In 1996 Alig and his friend Robert “Freeze” Riggs murdered friend and drug dealer, Angel Melendez after an argument over a long-standing drug debt. Alig has claimed many times that he was so high that he hardly remembers the events. Yet he somehow managed to beat Angel to death with a hammer, leave him in his tub for a week then dismember him and throw his body in the Hudson river. Several months later, Melendez’s torso washed up. Alig was arrested, confessed and sentenced to 10-20 years. Alig was released after serving 17 years on May 5, 2014.

Check out Party Monster – the awful film starring Macauley Culkin, Seth Green and Marilyn Manson. Or the pretty good book, Disco Bloodbath by James St. JAmes.

  1. An ex club girl

Michael Alig is a convicted MURDERER. I don’t give a fuck how “glamorous” he was, his rampant drug ABUSE, how “cute” he thinks he is, or about his new show with Ernie “Glam” and stupid paintings. That selfish bastard took someone’s LIFE. Angel Melendez was his name. So what if he was a drug dealer? He had hopes, dreams, a family, loved ones, and a future. He is now DEAD and is no longer with us. I am a New Yorker and had the displeasure of meeting Alig several years ago. He was fiending for dope, and a certain drag queen was fishing around for some loose change for him. Pathetic. Did you know that Alig used to pimp young gay boys out? He did horrible things to people, and this pathetic, narcissist finally did the unthinkable and killed someone. And now that he’s out of prison, he wants more fame and fucking glory. And people are giving it to him!! That’s the sick part! He fucking murdered a man because he wanted more drugs, chopped up his body and threw it in the river!! If he were Ted Bundy, or Jeffrey Dahmer, would he still get this kind of attention?? Probably so. You people who are glamorizing this vain man-child should be ashamed of yourselves!!!

    • I agree w you 100%. My intention was to highlight an interesting period of specifically New York culture, the club kids. Alig just happens to be the notorious face. I always like the history better than the people. did Alig pay for his crimes? Probably. Is he a great misunderstood artist that should be celebrated? Absolutely not. Yes Michael Alig is an asshole.
